Hole 14

Tesselschade

Tesselschade (1594-1649, full name Maria Tesselschade Roemersdochter Visscher) was the daughter of an Amsterdam ship-owner who lost half of his merchant fleet on Christmas Eve 1593 in a severe storm on the Texel Rede.

Her father gave her the second name ‘Tesselschade’ (literally Texel loss) to commemorate the consequences of the dreadful storm. Tesselschade achieved renown in small circles as an artist and poet. Contemporaries praised her beauty.

Hole 14 is a beautiful but difficult task, with a junction between hills, water on the left and dunes on the right. When the wind blows, not unusually, disasters can occur which make the calamity of the fleet going down on the Texel Rede in 1593 a mere footnote.

Tip: Aim for the wide fairway stretch on the right. That’s safer, but those who play a good game have an easier shot at the green from the left.
