Hole 6

Juttertje

The Juttertje is the best known of the many liqueurs that our island is so rich in (such as the Wagemakertje, Tesselschade, Strender Stropertje and Durper Drup).

The name of the herbal drink brewed to a secret recipe, borrowed from Texel’s oldest profession, the ‘jutter’ or beachcomber, has something to do with this fame. What a joy it was to have barrels of spirits washed up during a violent storm, because a day of drinking was then on the cards.

After the often disastrous score on hole 5 this is a sympathetic short par three, which like a Juttertje quickly invigorates and consoles.

Tip: Not many problems with this hole. Watch out for the high dune to the left and also make sure you don’t hit over the green, because of the splash.

Drive

The mental preparation for a par 3 is different from playing a par 4 or par 5. The first stroke is half the battle, because it must be on or near the green; after that two putts or a chip and a putt are needed to score the par or at least the bogey (ups and downs)! At the tee-sign carefully calculate the length from the white or red tile, deduct the distance to the tee-markers, and see by the flag on the flagpole where the pin is located, so as to finally calculate the exact number of metres to the flag. Make a habit of this routine on every par 3 you play.

Approach

The core of the sixth hole is the choice of club and the height of play! Try to play the green high because from the middle of the green you have a downhill slope to the water obstacle. So play the ball from the left foot, ¼ left and ¾ right for the right-handed player! That lets the ball depart a bit higher and it becomes stationary sooner. Try to limit your club choice to an iron, because the metalwood has a tendency of rolling on more.

Green

No bunkers and a flat, beautifully-cut front green, so the club choice for a chip and run will easily be an iron 7 or 8. The most difficult position is to the left of the green. A bogey can easily be achieved from this rough. The club of choice from this location is the sand wedge. There’s a clear slope or inclination on the green; from the tee’s point of view it runs from left-high to right-low. Remember that the high side comes from the left when aligning your putt.
