Hole 13

IJzeren Kaap

This is a dangerous, beautiful blind hole, where you can easily lose your way. A focal point is welcome here.

The ‘IJzeren Kaap’ or Iron Cape was designed in 1854 as a landmark for ships on the Texel River, a channel in the Wadden Sea. It stood near the old harbour for oyster fishermen and other Wadden Sea sailors, initially unilluminated, later as a beacon of fire. The cast-iron sea cape near Oosterend still rises above the embankment, albeit in a slightly different place than in 1854.

Hole 13 presents golfers with many problems. Transverse water has to be overcome (right at the first stroke?) and then a choice has to be made. The Iron Cape helps.

Tip: Low handicappers safely hit the ball on the left and retain a nice approach to the Cape. High handicappers have to take the ditch into account at stroke two.
