Hole 18

Dooiemanskuul

Thanks to the bunker on 18, built following the example of Royal St. George’s in England, the hole has an English touch.

According to legend, a few centuries ago the Dooiemanskuul (or Dead Men’s Hollow) was a mass grave in the English cemetery in the Eierlandse Duin near Milestone 33. Britons who died in the Battle of Texel (1672) met an inglorious end there. Texel storytellers are happy to take their audience for a ride with the horrifying experience of a postman who, in 1879, felt two ice-cold hands on his forehead at that spot. Every Eierlander knew that you shouldn’t be there.

The bunker is also a place it would be better that you avoid as a golfer. The back is 4 metres high. Good luck getting out of that.

Tip: Unless you can really hit far, better to go left around the Dooiemanskuul. After that the route across the middle of the fairway is the safest option by far.
